2009 MAUI INVITATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL


The annual Maui Invitational Music Festival, held during the months of June and July, features a variety of workshops and concerts.

Presented by the nonprofit Arts Education for Children Group, the Maui Invitational Music Festival was created to provide opportunities for students to study and play alongside accomplished instructors.  Workshops are open to musicians and vocalists of all ages and are separated by skill level. This year’s schedule includes  presentations from Hawaiian and African musical traditions to Hip Hop and Hot Club to playing brass instruments and symphonies.

The 2009 Maui Music Festival is sponsored by the County of Maui, Hawaii Tourism Authority, Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel, and Arts Education for Children Group.

Henry Kaleialoha Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival - June 26-28 guitar

A full weekend of performances at Ka‘anapali Beach Hotel begins on Friday, June 26 with a sunset Kanikapila and Hula Show featuring  Alan Akaka & The Islanders at the Tiki Courtyard.

Starting at noon on Saturday, June 27th, some of Maui’s aspiring youth and adult musicians perform on stage.  Then at 5pm, “Legends of Hawaiian Music,” a documentary featuring Henry Kaleialoha Allen screens in the Kanahele Room. Alan Akaka & The Islanders and guests entertain in the Tiki Courtyard at 6pm. 
Honolulu radio personality  Skylark Rossetti is the emcee for the  star-studded “Henry Kaleialoha Allen and Friends Concert” at 7:00pm. Allen brings his "Tropical Swing with A Touch Of Cool Jazz,"  to the stage along with Alan Akaka & The Islanders and special guest Senator Brickwood Galuteria.  A performance by the Colin John Blues Band follows.

On Sunday, June 28, Alan Akaka & the Islanders, Skylark Rosetti, and special guests will entertain at the Sunday Champagne Brunch in the Tiki Terrace.

Henry Kaleialoha Allen was one of the original Hawaiian steel guitarists for the world famous "Hawaii Calls" radio broadcast show and played with local greats such as Alfred Apaka and René Paulo at Honolulu's popular clubs. He polished his jazz guitar talents in Los Angeles in the midst of Hollywood's swing days and has played Las Vegas. Returning to Maui, he began playing a different note, arranging and producing text books and becoming a music educator.
Henry Allen has been recognized as "The Master Artist" of the Hawaiian steel guitar and Hawaiian music by the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Artists.
Governor Linda Lingle proclaimed April 4, 2004 as  "Henry Kaleialoha Allen Day.”  Also in 2004, he received congratulatory honors from the Hawaii State Senate for outstanding contributions to Hawaiian music.  In 2005 Allen was recognized by the Maui County Council for Renown Musical accomplishments and contributions while serving as Hawaii’s “Ambassador of Aloha” for more than 50 years.
In 2009,  he was recognized at a special ceremony at Capitol in Chambers by the 25th Senate Legislature of the State of Hawaii as “Hawaiian Musician Extraordinare” and "Living Treasure" in recognition of his lifetime work on the Hawaiian steel guitar. Governor Lingle has proclaimed June 2009 as "Hawaiian Steel Guitar Month" in honor of Henry Kaleialoha Allen.
Honored teacher, author, and  virtuoso, Henry Kaleialoha Allen has created a legacy that will be treasured by all who hear the lilting music of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar

Jacqueline Leilani Rossetti is the Honolulu Skylark, a name synonymous with Hawaiian radio. She was a co-founder of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and has hosted the Merrie Monarch Festival for more than 30 years. Skylark was recognized as Outstanding Hawaiian Woman of the Year in 1984, Broadcaster of the Year in 1991, and a Na Hoku Hanohano Award Winner in 1993 and 1996. A well-known Hawaii media personality, Senator Brickwood Galuteria has spent the majority of his career in the entertainment and broadcasting industry. He has performed on radio, television, in film and video and has served as spokesman for various government agencies and private businesses. Currently, he represents Hawaii's 12 Senate District in the State legislature. A son of Hawaii with native Hawaiian ancestry (as well as Filipino, Portuguese, and English), Senator Galuteria has been involved in programs and issues of cultural significance.

"Making A Band" Performance - June 26
After the Maui Invitational Music Festival workshop “Making a Band” students and faculty will make music at The Kihei Charter School on June 26th. This free recital will begin at noon.

 

Hot Club of Hulaville - July 3

“Adventures in Paradise”  with Hot Club of Hulaville takes place at 7:30pm on Friday, July 3rd at  Historic ‘Iao Theater  in Wailuku.  The Hot Club of Hulaville, featuring Sonny Silva, Emmet Mahoney, Duane Padilla, David Chiorini, and Ginai, performs their special blend of 1930s style jazz, swing, and gypsy music with a Hawaiian touch. There is a $10 Suggested Donation at the Door and proceeds benefit  the music education programs of the nonprofit Arts Education for Children Group. This concert is part of Wailuku’s First Friday celebration when Market Street is closed to traffic and open to festivities.

Hot Club of Hulaville also presents a free sunset performance at The Westin Maui Hotel & Spa in the Ka‘anapali Resort on Friday, July 4 from 5:30 to 7pm.

Maui Community Band  - July 2 and July 4

Concerts by the Maui Community Band are an annual Festival favorite.  Lisa Owen is  founder and music director of The Maui Community Band which is comprised of musicians from all walks of life  -- doctors, opera singers, car salesmen, bankers, teachers, hotel workers, high school students, and retirees. The Band will debut an original Hawaiian medley that was commissioned especially for the festival by Arts Education for Children Group. Arranged by Siuai Laufou, Band Director of Kamehameha Schools of Maui,  it is comprised of  songs by Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, better known as IZ.
The Maui Community Band performs at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center in Kahului on July 2nd at 7pm and at Lahainatown’s July 4th Concert in the Park. The Fourth of July festivities begin at 5:30pm on the Lahaina Library lawn. The show opens with the Mike Buono Jazz Trio and closes with fireworks.

HIP HOP  - July 3
The Hip Hop workshop “Intelligent Movement- An exploration of the Four Foundations of Hip Hop Performing Arts: Music, Dance, Vocal Performance, and Visual Arts” culminates in a free show on July 3rd from 11am to noon at the MACC.  Jonathan Sypert (aka iNTREPid), cutting edge performer from Oahu and Honolulu Magazine’s best Hip Hop Dance Instructor leads the workshop and headlines the performance.

June 8 - 10    BRASS BASICS FOR BEGINNERS
LP Studios music director, Tony Wheeler,  instructs a comprehensive introductory workshop for aspiring brass students. The workshop covers beginner brass techniques in the areas of: embouchure, air velocity, pitch, intonation, note names, basic warm-up techniques, reading music, basic music theory.

June 10 - 12    INTERMEDIATE BRASS WORKSHOP
LP Studios music director, Tony Wheeler,  hosts an extensive program for individuals and groups by elaborating on intermediate level techniques with multiple key scales for both major and minor, pitch relativity, sight reading, introduction into solo and improvisation, harmony of voices, intermediate warm-ups, reading music with intermediate level theory.

June 15 - 19  and June 22-26  AFRICAN DRUMMING, DANCING, & POETRY
This comprehensive workshop provides an introduction to the basic principles of African dance, drumming, and poetry writing. Hand drum lessons with “Easy Rhythm Instruction”  covers rhythm notation, anchors and variations, four-four, and other constructions. Award-winning poet Ayin Adams leads participants through writing projects in preparation for a final performance.

June 22- 26   MAKING A BAND
LP Studios music director, Tony Wheeler, hosts an intensive five day program to develop and focus youth in the creation of a band. The program covers all aspects of being in a band.  Individual players of all instruments including bass, guitar, and percussion are invited to participate.  Solo players and existing bands are welcome. Topics covered will include Arranging, Style/Direction, Dynamics, Lead/Back ground vox, Song Selection, Playing Together, and Stage Presence.  A final performance and studio recording are included.

June 26 -  CULTURAL DIFFUSION OF THE HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR
The concept of playing the guitar by sliding a steel bar over the strings to produce a glissando effect originated in Hawaii in the late nineteenth century. This novel idea and the developed techniques of doing so were shared with the world by Hawaiian performers. They had a huge impact on world musical styles including Country, Blues, Rock and Roll, Swing, Bluegrass, African Juju Music , and Indian Classical Ragas. This seminar demonstrates some of these musical styles and the various instruments that were developed from the Hawaiian Guitar. Instructor Robert Kinkaide.

June 26 & 27    PLAYING THE HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR
Internationally touring, Hawaii-based musician Colin John  teaches traditional acoustic and electric lap-style playing utilizing open G, D and C tunings. Colin  demonstrates and explains the relevance and importance of Hawaiian Steel guitar playing and the impact that it has had on music globally, including the Blues, Gospel and Rock and Roll.  Students need either a purpose-built Hawaiian guitar for lap-style playing or they can use a regular acoustic guitar with a nut extender to raise the strings. This promises to be an enjoyable course wherein the students will be encouraged to interact and perform. All skill levels are welcome and a willingness to learn and have fun are the primary requirements.

June 27    THE HISTORY OF THE HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR
Kumu Alan Akaka  takes you through the history of the steel guitar. Many fans of Country, Western Swing, Jazz, Rock & Roll and other ethnic music genre are not aware that the steel guitar was originated by a teenager in the Hawaiian Islands. Throughout the 20th century, the steel guitar was adopted and adapted to the many music styles  it is used in today. Kumu Akaka  gives a demonstration on the steel guitar and entertain questions from the audience.

July 2     EXPLORING GYPSY JAZZ IMPROVISATION WITH THE HOT CLUB OF HULAVILLE
In traditional music education, music begins "from the outside" as a series of symbols and instructions that one is expected to practice, memorize and repeat in front of an audience. Come join the Honolulu-based Hot Club of Hulaville for a musical experience from a different point of view. Join Hot Club's Gypsy Jazz violinist Duane Padilla as he leads participants in an exploration of the magic of improvisation, the art of creating music "in the moment". Through a series of fun interactive activities, Duane shows students how understanding a few basic musical principles can unlock the universe of music that lives inside all of us. May 14 - July 4   CONCERT BAND WORKSHOP
The Maui Community Band, under the direction of Lisa Owen, holds a series of weekly workshops on Thursday nights in Central Maui.  The goal is to perform at the 2009 Maui Invitational Music Festival concerts scheduled in the month of June and on July 4th in Lahaina.  Woodwind, brass, and percussion players are welcome to join the band in pursuing their instruments further and learning new music, including an original arrangement of "Iz" songs.
